Sump Pump Installation & Replacement in Buffalo, NY

What a sump does on the lake plain

A sump is a controlled low point. The pit is set below the level of the floor slab, so groundwater that would otherwise rise through the cove joint and floor cracks rises into the pit instead, and the pump lifts it out of the house. On free-draining soil a sump might run a few times a year. On the Odessa and Niagara soils the Erie County survey maps under most of Buffalo, with a water table in the upper subsoil from December through May, a sump can run steadily for weeks at a time in late winter and spring.

That changes the design. The pit needs volume so the pump does not short-cycle. The pump needs capacity for sustained flow at the head your basement requires, not a rating chosen because it was on the shelf. The discharge line needs a check valve so the column of water does not fall back and restart the pump, and it needs to leave the house in a way that survives January.

Installation: pit, pump, lid, discharge

A new installation begins with the pit location, normally the lowest corner of the basement or wherever the interior drain can be pitched to. The slab is opened, a perforated liner is set on a bed of washed stone so groundwater can enter from the sides and bottom, and the liner is backfilled with stone. When the sump is part of a perimeter drain system, the drain pipe enters the liner above the pump inlet. A sealed, gasketed lid closes the pit to keep humidity, odor and soil gas out of the basement; Building Science Corporation's guidance on keeping water out of basements is specific that the sump should have an airtight lid and a battery backup.

The pump is a submersible unit with a float appropriate to the pit, connected through a check valve to a rigid discharge riser. The discharge exits through the rim joist or wall above grade and is carried far enough from the foundation that the water does not return to the backfill. In freezing weather a discharge line that runs full and stops can freeze solid; we grade the line to drain empty and, where a long buried run is needed, install a freeze-relief fitting so the pump has somewhere to push water if the line ices up.

Replacement: what usually failed and why

Replacement calls follow a pattern. A pump that ran continuously for years on the lake plain wore out its motor. A float switch stuck against the pit wall. A check valve failed and the pump cycled itself to death. A discharge froze in a cold snap and the pump burned out pushing against it. Or the pump was fine and the power went out in a storm, which is when the water arrives.

We replace the pump with one sized for your pit and head, correct whatever caused the failure, and add a battery backup where the basement is finished or the house has a history of storm outages. A water-powered backup is an option where the water service pressure supports it and the municipality allows it. For a house with a long history of heavy inflow, a second primary pump on a higher float provides capacity during the worst of the melt.

Discharge rules in Buffalo and the suburbs

Where sump water is allowed to go is a local rule, and it differs across the service area. The city of Buffalo is served by a combined sewer system, which the EPA in 2012 described as discharging about four billion gallons of combined sewage a year through 52 outfalls to the Niagara River and its tributaries; the Buffalo Sewer Authority's Queen City Clean Waters program is a multi-year effort to reduce those overflows and basement backups. Most suburban towns have separate storm and sanitary sewers and prohibit sump discharge into the sanitary side.

In practice that means we route the discharge to the yard, to a storm sewer or curb outlet where permitted, or to a dry well on lots with enough space and suitable soil, and we confirm the requirement with your municipality before the line is run. Pumping groundwater into a sanitary sewer is the kind of thing that works until the town finds it.

How do I know if my sump pump is about to fail?

Listen for it. A pump that hums without pumping, rattles, runs longer than it used to, or cycles on and off every few seconds is telling you something. Lift the float by hand: if it does not start, or starts and does not stop, it needs attention before the next melt.

Do I need a battery backup?

If the basement is finished, if you store anything you care about down there, or if your neighborhood loses power in storms, yes. The heaviest inflow and the outages arrive together. A backup carries the basement through the hours that matter.

My sump pit is dry all year. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily; some pits were set into fill that does not connect to the water table, and some houses sit on a rise. It becomes a problem if the floor is wet while the pit is dry, which means water is entering above the drain or the drain is not reaching the pit. That is worth a look.

Can the sump discharge tie into my downspout drain?

Only if that line actually goes to daylight or a storm sewer and has capacity. Many older Buffalo downspout lines were tied to the combined sewer or have collapsed. We trace the line before connecting anything to it.
